Reliving my childhood with Mr Frosty

* We were sent Mr Frosty in exchange for this review. All opinions are honest and my own.

As a child in the 80s, there were certain toys that I really really wanted. Barbies, My Little Pony, Lights Alive and Mr Frosty!

I was lucky and got most of what I asked for, but I never owned a Mr Frosty, so I had to make do with playing with my neighbour’s one instead. We spent many a day over the summer holidays making snow cones of various flavours. The fact that you could make these yourself and crush the ice was just awesome.

Recently, I was given the chance to review the newly revamped version and as you can imagine, I was way, way more excited about this than the boys were. I’d get the chance to relive a part of my childhood again- who could say no to that?

Mr Frosty arrived just before the weekend of the heatwave, which was just perfect timing. E was super excited when I explained what it was and very patiently waited until after lunchtime on a Saturday to try it out.

Mr Frosty comes with:

  • Mr Frosty
  • Bowls and spoons x 2
  • Penguin juice dispenser
  • Ice Tray moulds x 2
  • Ice Lolly moulds

Mr Frosty itself has been updated, but essentially still works in the same way. To make slushies you simply add ice cubes to his head, pop his hat back on and turn the handle to crush the ice.

In theory, it sounds very simple. In practice, we found the ice hard to crush. We left the ice out for 30 minutes as per the instructions, but both boys struggled to turn the handle and push the hat down at the same time.

We used shop-bought ice the first time around as we were impatient, and these cubes were quite big. The second time around, we made ice shapes from the supplied moulds and found those slightly easier to crush. Having said that, it says that Mr Frosty is suitable for 3+ which I think is a little ambitious. Even E, who is 6 in a couple of weeks, found turning the handle hard work, so adults would definitely need to supervise children under the age of 8.

Mr Frosty now no longer comes with unhealthy syrups that were full of E numbers (if I remember rightly, they also coloured your tongue?!), and instead, you can use sugar-free squash of your liking to add flavour.

Once the ice was crushed, we split them into two bowls and added some blackcurrant squash to them to make our slushies. The boys couldn’t get enough of it and had to have another go!

We then used the lolly moulds to make some ice lollies. The lollies came out of the mould easily enough, but it would have been better if they were designed to catch drips as they ended up being quite messy! This didn’t bother the boys at all, though and they thoroughly enjoyed them, so it’s just a small gripe of mine.

Overall, as you can see from the photo below, they LOVED Mr Frosty and have not stopped asking when we can use it again. It’s the perfect toy for the summer to cool down with and just think – even adults could use it by adding alcohol to it! Win-Win!

Mr Frosty retails at £19.99 and is available to buy from Smyths Toys and The Entertainer

  1. This toy was the ultimate goal as a kid! And obviously is still so much fun!! xx #KCACOLS

  2. I always wanted one of these as a child! That’s a great idea to add alcohol as a fun adult summer treat, a lemon vodka slushy would be lovely in the heat! #KCACOLS

  3. This is awesome! Takes me back to my childhood too. I’d love one of the kids to try too #KCACOLS

  4. Oh man, this looks like lots of fun! I wonder if it’s sold here in the U.S., as I’ve never heard of it before. Your boys truly look like they are having a blast-and what adorable kiddos they are! #KCACOLS

  5. I’m surprised that after nearly 20 years they still haven’t made it easier to crush the ice! I have mixed feelings about replacing the old flavours with sugar free as I’m not a fan of the chemical aftertaste it has but understand you don’t want have to scrape the children off the ceiling after all the sugar and colourings in the original set!

  6. I think you’ve done a really honest review of this product which is good to see. It looks like fun to make slushies at home and an activity that can keep the kids occupied for a little while too which is always a big tick as far as I’m concerned:)

Oh a Mr Frosty! I never had one of these as a child but I always wanted one! Perfect timing though being able to use it during our heatwave! Thank you for sharing your honest review 🙂 Thanks so much for linking up at #KCACOLS. Hope you come back again next Sunday x

  8. Oh my gosh as soon as I seen this post I knew I had to read it – I always wanted a Mr Frosty but my Mum would never get me one ( I can now understand why!) I still at the grand old age of 34 still bring it up now! We recently seen one advertised on tv and my girls shouted can we have one – and whilst it looks very messy and will probably get used once I think I am going to have to buy one! #kcacols
