3 ways to keep your kids active indoors

Children should be getting at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Most of that activity for young children will end up naturally occurring from the way they play.

But, it’s often much easier for kids to be active when they’re able to play and run around outside. Unfortunately, that isn’t a possibility every day. With winter just around the corner, colder temperatures, rain, and snow could keep kids indoors more often than not.

So, while we’ve talked before about some indoor activities to keep your kids busy, what can you do to make sure they’re also staying physically active while they’re stuck inside? Let’s go over a few ideas they’ll love, so they can get in the recommended amount of exercise every day, and it will be disguised as play.

Have a Dance Party

This is, perhaps, the easiest way to keep your kids active indoors. Throwing an impromptu dance party is a great way to cure boredom, get your kids moving, and give them an energy boost throughout the day. Plus, it’s easy for you to get involved, as well.

Turn on some energising music, and let everyone dance to their heart’s content! There is no right or wrong way to do this, as long as you’re encouraging your kids to move and be silly. They’ll love seeing that “silly” side of you, too, if you’re willing to dance along with them.

Dancing is a great way to alleviate stress, so it’s not only a good cardiovascular exercise, but it can be good for the mental health of your kids, too.

Football Hall

If you have a long hallway in your home, it can be used for a variety of different games. Football is a great option. You can set up two small nets or even pieces of tape at each end of the hall, and your kids can kick the ball back and forth, trying to block it from each other’s nets.

You don’t have to use a traditional football if you’re worried about it causing any damage. A softer, plush ball can do the trick, and may even cause your kids to work harder since they can be more unpredictable when kicked.

Set up an obstacle course

If you really want to get involved in your kids’ physical activity, set up a maze or obstacle course for them in your house. You can use everything from furniture, cushions, and blankets, to cardboard boxes and yarn.

This is a great way to let your creativity shine and build a course that will challenge your kids so much that they’ll want to do it over and over again.
