All you need to know to take care of Border Collies

Border Collies are one of the most popular breeds in America and for good reason. They’re versatile, intelligent, and absolutely adorable. However, just because they’re hugely popular doesn’t mean that you can care for them properly on your own without any prior experience with dogs or motivation to do so. So, here is what you need to know in order to take care of one.

1. They require a lot of attention

Border Collies are one of the most energetic breeds, so they need a lot of attention. Make sure that you’re able to give them at least an hour (and preferably two) of exercise and mental stimulation every day. If you can’t, then it’s best to get a different breed. Otherwise, they’ll become extremely anxious and might start barking or digging in order to get attention even though you aren’t giving them any, and that can lead to problems down the line. If you want to be loved by dogs of this breed, you’ll need to be prepared to give them the attention they need. This goes for any dog breed anyways, but it’s especially true for this breed.

2. They need a ton of physical exercise

Border Collies are working dogs, meaning that they need a lot of physical exercise every day. If you don’t give them enough, they’ll become extremely anxious and will most likely start digging up your yard in order to get the exercise that they need. This is especially true for young Border Collies; puppies should be exercised several times a day (one walk isn’t going to do it). The good thing is that Border Collies love to hike and run, so taking them out on long walks every day will probably turn into your favourite part of your daily routine.

3. They need tons of mental stimulation as well

Just because you take them out for lots of fun walks doesn’t mean that they’ll be happy with that. Border Collies need to have a lot of mentally stimulating activities as well, otherwise, they’ll get bored and become anxious again. This could lead them to start having frequent barking fits in order to entertain themselves when you’re not paying attention. In fact, many people suggest that owners use dog puzzle toys in order to keep their minds occupied when they aren’t being given physical exercise or going on walks.

4. They’re smart

Border Collies are extremely intelligent dogs, and they love to learn new things. It’s a good idea to take them to a dog training class as soon as possible. Not only will it keep their minds occupied, but you might also learn a thing or two about how to care for them properly. Border Collies are also great with kids and other dogs, so they make excellent family pets. They’re extremely adaptable and can be expected to get along well with any situation that you throw at them.

5. They shed a lot

Border Collies shed year-round and twice a year (yes, we said twice), so prepare yourself for lots of hair in your house and on your clothes! Also, try having the carpets professionally cleaned every few months if you want to keep your home looking nice. Another option is to invest in a good lint brush and use it as often as possible. Their coats are also really easy to brush, so you don’t have to spend hours doing that every day, either. Just be ready for lots of fur!

6. They require a firm hand

Border Collies are very intelligent dogs, but they’re also independent thinkers. This means that you’ll need to train them firmly and consistently from a young age if you want them to respect your authority and listen when it’s important. If not, then they can quickly turn into one of those ‘out of control’ breeds that people tend to fear on the streets these days (and with good reason). On the plus side, Border Collies are able to understand human emotion, so they usually respond best to positive reinforcement.

Why do some dogs need more care than others?

One of the many factors that make every dog unique is the breed. Some breeds may need more care than others, depending on their size, needs, temperament, and other features which make them different from other kinds of dogs. This often results in people having certain preconceived notions about how to take care of a particular breed. As such, it’s essential to learn as much as you can about specific breeds before committing yourself to take care of one for life.

Just like every dog is unique, so are Border Collies. They are known for being very intelligent dogs that require a lot of exercise, mental stimulation, and firm discipline in order to turn into a well-behaved loving pet as long as you’re willing to put the time and effort into giving them everything they need, then you’ll have a great companion by your side.
