An open letter to my gorgeous boy on his 5th birthday

e-bday

To my gorgeous boy,

Today you are 5, and I’m not quite sure how that happened?! Time seems to be going past too quickly for my liking and you are growing into a young boy right before my eyes without me having quite realised it.

I still remember when we first brought you into the world and when I first heard your cry – I remember it like it was yesterday. So very precious.

A part of me wants you to stay as you are and never grow up. I don’t want to miss the cuddles and the odd conversations we have when you ask about life and question things.

You are a smart boy and easily soak up any information given to you – just like your beloved Uncle.

When you first started school I worried (as all mothers do) about whether you were ready. You had only just learnt to write your name over that summer but it was like you knew what was expected of you and suddenly rather than spending time running around the house at full speed (like your brother does now) you spent your time drawing and writing.

This is now currently one of your favourite things to do. Not a day passes by without you asking me “Can I do drawing mummy?” And of course, the answer is always yes. You have inherited your daddy’s gift of drawing. Like your mummy though you are a lover of books and I regularly find you in the living room, lying on your tummy, on the rug with your nose in a book.

I also needn’t have worried one bit about school, you rose to the challenge and as with everything you do, you soaked it all up. We’ve had nothing but glowing reports on how well you’ve been doing which just makes me burst with pride.

You’ve grown and become more independent this year adamant to do more things yourself – even if it it means that sometimes it takes absolutely forever because you also get easily distracted or end up messing around and forget what you were supposed to be doing!

Starting school also meant that you started to go on play dates with your friends. When I asked you whether you were happy to go to your friends house without me there and for me to come and pick you up afterwards I was met with cries of “No mummy, I want you to be there!” I secretly was quite relieved about this. It showed me that although you are becoming more independent you are not ready to leave mummy completely just yet which is fine by me!

You love nothing more at the moment than reading, watching and drawing sharks which seems to have become your new obsession of late.

I’m so proud of the boy you are growing into, you have become a great big brother to M – always willing to help him when he needs and I love the times when I can hear you both playing happily in your room cackling like best friends, or when you have sat M down so you can read him a book. Brotherly love right there!

You are a very caring, understanding and considerate young boy but as with most boys you also have your moments. I sometimes do wonder what I did in life to deserve you and your brother.

Although you are growing up fast – you will always be my little boy and I will always be there for you. I love you with all my heart.

Happy Birthday my beautiful boy.

With all my love,

Mummy xxx

  1. Hi Jane,

Thanks so much for your comment. I honestly can’t believe he is 5 and that I have been a mummy for 5 years. I do have to remind myself to cherish every day whilst my boys are still young and need me and want cuddles because before I know it they will be have grown up! xxx
