Being able to holiday abroad may feel like a long way away. However, once the world gets back to normality, I think many of us will be looking to travel again.

We’ve really missed not travelling. There’s just something about exploring somewhere new, staying in a hotel enjoying the buffet breakfast (one of my boy’s favourite part of a holiday!) and just generally being away from home that lifts our spirits.

We’ve visited Spain a fair few times for our summer holiday it was the first place we had our first family holiday with an 18-month old in tow. We chose to visit Palma de Mallorca and had the best of times.

Where to stay

Although it was a while ago we visited, we stayed at the Hotel Isla Mallorca Urban Hotel & Spa in a Junior Suite. We had a balcony with views across Palma. The suite was ideal for a young family as there was enough room for E to have his own area with his travel cot and for us to have a place to relax in the evening when he was asleep. The hotel also had an outdoor pool we could take advantage of and was well located to see the local sights. Palma has a variety of hotels to suit all budgets, so it’s worth looking around for a deal.

Things to see

Palma Cathedral

Known as La Seu Cathedral or the Cathedral of Santa Maria of Palma, this is a gothic Roman Catholic Cathedral that is located by the sea is well worth a visit. The sheer size of the Cathedral with ornate windows is impressive, and you will also get to see some of Gaudi’s abandoned work.

Bellver Castle

Located to the west of Palma, Bellver Castle (Castell de Bellver) was built in the 14th century. The castle is a bit of a walk from the Hotel Isla Mallorca, but it is worth the trek to see the fantastic views over Palma Bay.

Pueblo Espanol

Pueblo Espanol means “Spanish Town” and is an open-air museum which depicts various buildings, streets and squares of lots of Spanish cities such as Cordoba, Toledo and Madrid. It’s a great place to visit with kids as they will learn lots about Spanish culture.

Puerto Portals

A beautiful marina, it is known as the St Tropez of Palma. It’s great for watching the world go by and seeing how the other half live.

Things to do

Palma to Soller train

No visit to Palma can be complete without a train trip! The Palma to Soller train is one of the oldest in Europe. The journey takes just over an hour (Palmer to Soller and back), through mountains with spectacular views along the way. We really enjoyed this trip and looking back now; it definitely cemented E’s love for trains!

Palma Aquarium

An absolute must-visit with kids. There is so much to see and do here, and you will get to see lots of different types of sea-life, see shows in the Aquadome as well as music and entertainers. Even now, it’s one of the best aquariums we have been too.
