Regular readers of my blog will know how much we love a good day out as a family. We love theme parks and trying out new experiences but doing these things invariably cost money.

Attractions these days offer “family” deals where you can receive an overall discount off the main ticket price. However, their idea of what constitutes as a family can be somewhat limited. After all, not all of us fit into the traditional two adults, and two children mould do we? It’s great to be able to save money on family activities, but these should be available for all types of families to make it affordable for everyone.

PayPlan recently conducted a study to find out just how much extra it costs for single-parent families to do family activities and I think the results will surprise you.

Here are some examples

A trip to the cinema for a single parent with two children would cost them £12.50 more compared to a family of four. A day out to WB Studio Tour would cost the single parent family £43 more. The findings don’t stop at just activities either; they extend into things like train tickets and holidays too.

One in four UK families are a single-parent family, so I am surprised that not more is being done to help. Activities and days out should be affordable for all, and it certainly doesn’t make sense that single-parent families are paying more.
