Ways to easily update your bathroom

We’ve not updated our bathroom since we moved in over 15 years ago, and it’s on our very long to-do list to get around to doing. There are many different bathroom styles to choose from, but I would say one of the main function of a bathroom is to have a place where you can relax and unwind after a long day. Make sure you do your research in finding a bathroom fitter that you trust to do the work before you begin.

Here, we take a look at ways you can easily update your bathroom.

Reworking the space

Does the current layout of your bathroom work well or do you think you would benefit from moving things around? While it may sound like a big job, freeing up space could be worth it. For example, you could move the bath so it sits neatly under the window. Don’t be afraid to have a play around with where you could move things like the bath, shower, toilet and sink. If you have a small bathroom, you may even decide to replace the bath with just a shower, increasing your floor space.

Flooring

Not many people think to update the flooring when redesigning a bathroom, but it is one of the first things that can really finish off the look of your bathroom. It’s worth taking the time to consider your flooring options as there are many different types to choose from. Marble, stone or even porcelain bathroom tiles come in many styles depending on the look you are going for. Take a look in-store and online and order some free samples so you can test these out to see what they look like in your space.

Lighting

Not all bathrooms are gloomy and dark places to relax and unwind. There are plenty of options for lighting the room, such as installing track lighting, recessed lighting or even converting to another room. Whatever your lighting choice is, remember to balance the light levels to make the room feel cosy and bright at the same time.

Open storage

Think you have no storage in your bathroom? Think again, there are lots you can do to really maximise the amount of storage available and make it look stylish. Use top drawers for tumblers and soaps to keep them neatly organised and leave more room for all your bathroom essentials to be displayed in baskets or boxes.

Bathroom style options

It is all down to personal choice of what you like. Bathrooms can vary from a traditional wood-panelled bathroom to a ’70s-inspired bathroom with metallics. Focusing on the material, your bathroom will be as stylish as you are. There are hundreds of bathroom accessories out there that you can buy to spice up your bathroom. An ottoman, a gorgeous towel rack, even a shower screen. If you can dream it up, you can find it. Head online to find inspiration and create a mood board of the styles you like the look of. This will help with the overall planning of your bathroom so you can then take the next step to source the items in the style you are after.

Traditional bathrooms

Using materials such as limestone and teak, classic traditional bathrooms are a classic choice. Perhaps you could use lots of marble to create a full-blown bathroom – an art gallery? Or you could add a wet room and use glass for wall mirrors and chandeliers. Most of the glamorous bathrooms we find in glossy mags have been brought to life by bespoke designers. Every small detail is done to perfection, from the foot-light bar and art deco light fittings to the lovely leather bench and the spacious shower.

Modern bathrooms

Modern bathrooms are usually minimalistic in style. These are available in all styles, from elegant to functional and everything in between.

Add-ons to Consider

There are various ways you can extend your bathroom. A fairly simple idea is a dressing room. Just hang a dressing screen over the shower area and watch TV in privacy while getting ready. You can also make use of the natural light from the window in the shower area. This is a good idea for a small house, but in a larger property, you will want to consider whether it is really necessary. You could easily add on further storage, by making the shower cubicle into a closet. Also, hanging a dressing screen is great for the bathroom as it doubles up as a dressing room, so you can change and get dressed without having to walk through the rest of the house. It’s a simple idea, but it creates extra space, and it works!
