Behind the Lens with Mummy Times Two

Welcome back to another week of Behind the Lens, my weekly guest series where bloggers share an image and tell us the story behind them.

Today we have Victoria from Mummy Times Two. She lives in Yorkshire with her Scientist husband and two children (Number One and Number Two).

Behind the Lens with Mummy times two

For a long time, I was a single mum to Number One. She was my world.

But for both of us, there was something missing. I yearned to give her a family. And she often asked me why she couldn’t have a brother or a sister like her friends. She announced, on a fairly regular basis, they always had someone else to play with.

When we met the Other Half, Number One had just turned five. Her pleas for a brother or sister continued, but we were both worried about whether the reality of a sibling would be different to her expectations. She has Asperger’s Syndrome, a type of Autism, which means that change is often difficult for her – as are busy, noisy situations.

We knew all too well that a new baby would mean all three of these in abundance.

Four years later, we did however eventually acquiesce to her pleas. We were still nervous about how she would cope, but over the years she had come a long way. We decided it was the right time.

At almost nine, Number One became a big sister. And no prouder big sister could there ever be.

In the last year, she has grown more than I would ever have dared imagine, she has understood that sometimes Number Two’s needs need to come first. She has relished playing with him. And she has delighted in his adoration of her.

They are quite simply the closest of siblings. I look back now and wonder why I ever worried about how she would cope.

Our lives are all undeniably richer for our new addition. He is the bond that has bound our family together. Over the last four years, two have become four. We have become a family.
